It's Chaenomeles Japanese quince they are edible although very hard, used for quince jelly or grated into stewed apple, in times past a bowl with them would be used as an air freshener, in Cornwall you may have seen the true quince a larger pear shaped fruit it's a bit cold for them here although I do someone who has one
I wondered what they were until I read your answer to Andy. I'm sure they are delicious served cold ;-) I am a little envious of the snow! Today is bright, sunny and cold down in Somerset.

You might see quince jelly for sale at something like a church fete, difficult to describe but with trying I have made it in the past I think there is one liquid in the freezer, most of them are small this year.
