Pink lakeside

At the drying edge of one of the Pink Lakes. The water is extremely saline (up to 800 times that of sea water) and home only to an algae which coats itself in pink extrusions to protect itself from the sunlight. The intensity of the pink seems to vary depending on the light and, I gather, is most intense in mid-late summer (about February).

I wonder of there is any other life present in the lake, George. This looks gloriously pink even in the Australian springtime.

The colour is incredible! I found that in Bolivia the colour changed during the day depending on the angle of light, we had everything from pink to oxblood red.

That color is indeed remarkable and the contrast between sky and lake is too.

Interesting colour and a nice wide view, George ! I saw something like that on the salt lakes of the island of Náxos, Greece ! But there is a special kind of alges responsible for this effect.
