Horeb

Mamaroneck, NY

The broken and scattered rocks symbolize the aftermath of the Rock in Horeb when Moses struck it as instructed. The blues and purple represent the outflowing of water as promised when the rock in Horeb was split. The blue color represents flowing water and our individual and unique introspective and spiritual journeys through life as well as our desire to soak up insight and knowledge while the rocks represent much needed strength and stability to address the many challenges and adversities in life as we thirst for peace and justice amidst the violence and injustice in our world. The smiling face represents the joy attained when our great thirst is relieved through acts of love, deeds of compassion, moments of peace and the attainment of greater understanding through learning and experience.

William Sutherland replied to Malik Raoulda:

Well said Malik! Exactly why I included scripture in the QR Code from the Torah, Bible and Qu'ran! If only people could get over their obstacles and realize we are all brothers and sisters regardless of our religion or lack thereof.

I agree with Malik's unifying and benevolent words, especially today when clashes are once again dramatically pitting faith-driven peoples in the Middle East against each other.

Your words and your composition are full of wisdom and richly symbolic, William.
I praise your optimism and your voluntarism, when my chronic disappointments tend to see in these broken rocks a reflection of the crumbling, ineluctable erosion of the human cultural edifice.....
But I follow your faith in love and in its redeeming and salutary virtue.

William Sutherland replied to Eric Desjours:

Eric, despite the fact we seem to destroy everything we touch including our beautiful planet, I always think there is hope since it remains a possibility even if it is distant.

What profound work.
The colors give an aura of purity, tranquility (inner peace) and spirituality
- tranquility despite water being mostly in motion and yet symbolizing so much more.
A truly remarkable artistic work, William!
