...'The Royal oak - 1722'... Chesterfield - Derbyshire.

In the very centre of the market town of 'Chesterfield' is the old inn ''The Royal oak'' Some details on the wall shield show - Built in the 12th.century is one of the oldest inns in England. It was formally a rest house for 'The Knights Templar' in the years of the holy crusades. Also used as a butchers shop and inn accommodation - the earliest known records show it to be an inn in 1722.

Thanks Marie-claire... yes when we are in Chesterfield I always visit this old inn for a quiet drink away from the crowds... it's fascinating to sit and think of all the many visitors who have passed through the doors over hundreds of years.
