'Gibbet rock' .. Cressbrook dale .. Derbyshire.

Along 'Cressbrook dale' we see ahead - the prominent 'Gibbet rock' ...so named because many years ago - criminals were placed and held captive in a 'Gibbet' a type of cage suspended from the rock. The poor captives were placed inside the cage either dead - or died later - and remained there..as a deterrent to all who pass by. On some mapping the rock is shown as 'Peters stone'.

David G Johnson replied to Nicolas Mertens:

Thanks Nicolas.. the top of the rock is accessible via a rugged path.. we have climbed and sat up there in the past. Good views !! but I don't suppose the prisoners were very interested !! :-)

Thank you 'Jaap' good walking too.. the green path is like walking on a lush soft carpet.. but the cloud came over making a dull grey day.

Imagine .... as the poor thieves and vagabonds are dragged to the top in chains..cold and bedraggled - beaten then lashed into the cage swinging in the rain and gales... then the prisoner guard .. says....
''Sorry it's a horrible death mate... but just look at those views''
