Vietnam 2016 / Hoi An 3xPiP
In addition to its architectural highlights, Hoi An is also known for its colourful Lantern Festival, which takes place on the eve of every full moon night. At 6pm, the city goes dark and hundreds or thousands of colourful lanterns light up the city.
At the Thu Bon River, which runs through the city, on this evening people put luminous lanterns in the water, both locals and tourists, sending their wishes along on their journey. Legend has it that good luck will follow any wish that floats downstream.
Another legend says that a woman was banished to the moon by a ruler for a transgression. Her husband wants to show her the way back to earth through the lights of the many lanterns.
