Sherborne, Dorset.

Sherborne ~ D'Urberville was formerly the base for the Somerset & Dorset Family History Society for nearly twenty years until their recent successful move to Yeovil. There was much evidence of the buildings former life, with old fireplaces, interesting windows and much more besides, often partly hidden by the necessary bookcases & computer stations. It has now been taken over and renamed D’Urberville, where vintage finds are on sale, together with a café on the top floor. Dramatic changes inside have revealed many beautiful original features.

I wonder if the name has been taken from Tess of the d'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy. Apparently the novel was set in the fictional county of Wessex, with more of a nod to Dorset. A really interesting place to visit, Rosa.

Rosalyn Hilborne replied to Amelia:

Yes definitely Amelia. I watched some of the latest version (a few years ago now) being filmed close by. There are many houses and villages around Sherborne that Hardy renamed in his novels. The road from Sherborne to Dorchester is beautiful and you feel you are in one of his novels ;-)) Thank you for your kind comments and I wish you a good new week.
