Monastery Kilmacduagh (PiPs)

Irland * Ireland

The monastery Kilmacduagh was founded by St Colman Mac Duach early in the 7th century. Kilmacduagh has one of the finest collection of monastic buildings in Ireland. The churches were plundered in the 13th century but the site remained the seat of a Bishop until the 16th century.
The Round Tower was the place of refuge for the monks in case of attack.

I agree with Roger..............these are really cracking photos. Such an interesting and fairly well preserved set of ruins. The tower seems really unusual and does not really fit in with the rest of the buildings, but on reading your narrative it's purpose becomes clear. Having said that, once you go in the tower you're then stuck and any attacker just has to wait, so I'm not sure how effective it would have been.

Great photography as always Susanne.

Susanne Hoy replied to Keith Burton:

We saw such towers in some Irish monasteries. When I saw such a tower the first time I was taken aback and I was wondering about the purpose of this building too. I don't know if it worked and if the monks were protected in this tower.
