C'est au 12ème. siècle que l'édifice fut construit en style gothique primitif.

On peut encore voir, à l'intérieur de l'édifice, la crypte anglo-saxonne et l'abside de l'abbaye bénédictine primitive que St. Wilfrid avait fait construire au 7ème. siècle.
