In a tree above my tent

A tawny frogmouth. At midnight, while camping, strange noises woke me. I shone a torch high up a tree above my tent, saw this bird, and photographed it. It is not an owl. Why? Unlike owls they don't have curved talons on their feet; in fact, their feet are small, and they're said to walk like a gout-ridden man! Their species name, strigoides, means owl-like. They're nocturnal and carnivorous, but Tawny Frogmouths aren't owls – they're more closely related to Nightjars.
They are beautiful creatures!

Truly a beautiful take on a beautiful creature, Diana. You were able to catch its delightful "furry" face feathers and beautiful livery patterns, I can even see a few of the comparatively straight talons on its small feet! The eyes are definitely owlish and such a bright orange. It seems to be staring you right in the eye and it's remarkable that it stood so still to have its portrait taken!

Beautifully captured, Diana. I appreciated your explanatory notes as, although I knew they are not considered owls, I had not previously read the details. Big huggs and best wishes for the building programme.

Such a beautiful looking bird.................it's eyes are mesmerising..!! You've captured it in perfect colour and detail Diana. It doesn't seem the slightest bit bothered about having it's photo taken.
