HWW Lindisfarne and its priory

A view encompassing the old harbour and ancient priory of Lindisfarne. To the left on the hill is a new tourist observation tower that overlooks the castle behind and to the left of me. PiP
The Priory is one of the most important centres of early English Christianity. Irish monks settled here in AD 635 and it became a major saint’s cult celebrating its bishop, Cuthbert. The masterpiece now known as the Lindisfarne Gospels was created here in the early 8th century. The ruins now visible are those of a 12th-century priory, which claimed direct descent from the early monastery. See last photo.

I have just been reading Ann Cleeves latest ‘Vera’ novel which is about an investigation of a suspicious death on the Island so I feel I have just visited. In truth I haven’t been this century so it’s great to see these photographs and read of recent changes,

Herb Riddle replied to Colin Ashcroft:

Hi Colin, glad you liked this pair of photos from here. It was a great place to explore, even with so many tourist around.

Yes, there are many books depicting this Island and its history, both factually and fiction too. I recently saw a brand fiction book the other day with the castle on the cover. My wife Eileen has read many of Anne Cleeves books but not me.

Best Wishes. Herb

Lindisfarne has been on my list for a long time Herb, and these beautiful pictures make it still a favoured destination. I also use to like the band :-) Love the main shot especially.

HWW. Cheers, Rosa.

Good that it has re-kindled your ideas of a visit up here. Never really knew their music. Glad you liked the shots.

Herb Riddle replied to TOZ:

Glad you liked it Gordon. We never got the chance to visit the observation tower, walking instead to an illusive lighthouse which in practice was a mere beacon. Some great places to see on this coast.

It took me a moment to get my eye in and see where the old Priory is, as my eye was drawn mostly to the tower on the left. Once I spotted in (and checked out the PiPs) it's quite obvious, especially when viewed large.

Very well captured Herb.
