Kettleness railway memories

A look at this old station that was built in 1883 on the Whitby, Redcar and Middlesbrough Union Railway between Loftus and Whitby. In 1911 it also served the nearby village of Goldsbrough as part of the North Eastern Railway. This station, along with the line itself, was closed in 1858 due to the high costs of maintenance on the tunnels and bridges and is now used by scouting and outward bound groups.

The first and 2nd PiP show the Kettleness Railway tunnel just to the south of here. At 250m long with a gentle curve it is now almost completely hidden. Until recently an exciting walk was had for those not afraid of the dark and crumbling brickwork.
The third PiP, is a mile or so up the line (now a path for walkers and cyclist) towards Runswick Bay and shows a memorial piece of work depicting scenes from the railway and local area, a topic often undertaken with help of local school children.

A great main image and interesting PiPs, Herb. We have a seemingly endless series of UK-sourced railway shows on TV and (I may be wrong) I suspect this station and tunnels were shown a few months back.

HaHa, and there I was last night looking at the number of train programs coming out of Australia -not to mention gold-hunting programs. A good stuff though that I do enjoy. I think lots of these old line history programs gel in together after a bit though. Glad you liked them all the same.

I really like very much these photos and text and superb link, Herb
Many thanks!
They are testimonies of a glorious past and your country with the Industrial Revolution was the great driver of this means of transport

In Portugal some railway lines were closed for financial reasons
I was fortunate to go through them all and crossed stunning landscapes and wonderful memories of those trips
Today many stations are still abandoned but little by little they are being recovered like this one

Herb Riddle replied to J.Garcia:

Ah, in many ways, our past really was quite 'glorious' at least viewed now. My own town of Oldham was really part of the beating heart of the Industrial revolution which even now, has not got quite over it. Most railway lines and buildings that could be salvaged have been so already but we still hear of another line or old engine that has been recovered for us. I shall show other instances of our railways near here later. Glad you enjoyed these.

Best Wishes, Herb

The main picture reminds me of "The Railway Children", which I happened to catch on one of the TV channels recently. I've seen it so many times...a great film. Thanks for the video link which was very enjoyable and great accompanying song! I like all four of your very good and informative pictures. Take care. Cheers, Rosa.
