San Cataldo zählt zu den letzten Basiliken auf Sizilien im normannischen Baustil. Während der Regentschaft Wilhelm I. in Sizilien baute sein oberster Minister Maio von Bari die Kirche San Cataldo zwischen 1154 und 1160.
