Rocca albornoziana

The fortress of Spoleto stands on the top of the hill Sant'Elia, it was built in 1359, by the will of Pope Innocent VI who wanted to re-establish the authority of the Pontiff (who then lived in Avignon), in his territories.
It was built on commission of Cardinal Egidio Albornoz starting from 1359.
Until the middle of the eighteenth century the fortress hosted the papal governors and the most important personalities of the time. In 1499 it also hosted Lucrezia Borgia as governor of the Duchy. During the 16th and 17th centuries there was a phase of deep decline. From 1764, when the governors preferred to move inside the city, the first tampering with the original structure began. In 1817 it became a prison and the large influx of inmates led to the construction of a further body of buildings. The prison building lasted until 1983, after which, fortunately, it underwent an important restoration that brought it back to its ancient splendour. Besides its historical value, the fortress also has a cultural value. In fact, inside there is the National Museum of the Duchy of Spoleto, made up of materials coming from the civic collections.

There is now a museum. A pity we had no time to visit. No one in the 3 days.

Soprattutto di andare all'interno a visitare.
