Gray ratsnake

The gray ratsnake or gray rat snake (Pantherophis spiloides), also commonly known as the central ratsnake, chicken snake, midland ratsnake, or pilot black snake, is a species of nonvenomous snake in the genus Pantherophis in the subfamily Colubrinae. The gray ratsnake is one of about ten species within the American ratsnake genus Pantherophis. (from Wikipedia).

I showed this photo to a biologist at church this morning. He identified it immediately.

Ronald Losure replied to neira-Dan:

It is almost certainly a colubrid. Almost all the snakes here are colubrids except for pit vipers, which this is not. Thanks for the visit.

Good catch Ronald, we don't often get a chance to photograph reptiles in their natural surroundings. (Except 3-4 years ago when the cat came indoors with a small grass snake in her mouth)!

Ronald Losure replied to HappySnapper:

Thanks, Maurice. My dogs are very good at killing snakes, including the poisonous ones. Branco finds them and barks at them. Garip shakes and kills them. I wish they would leave them alone.

Ronald Losure replied to Danielle:

Thank you very much, Danielle. There are many things here more dangerous than snakes. For example, fire ants. But I have learned to be safe.
