The small heath (Coenonympha pamphilus) was a particularly frequent butterfly this year here in Franconia. The wide distribution is explained by the fact that this butterfly species is well adapted to higher temperatures and the caterpillars of this butterfly are unspecialised and can feed on many types of grass. The picture shows a freshly hatched butterfly against the light.
