Norwich, CT Line Safari
I am planning to embark on a big safari to Norwich, CT later this week or this weekend. Norwich has a municipal utility that features a lot of interesting 4.8 kV construction.

If there are any specific poles you would like me to photograph around there, please post their addresses on Street View and I'll add them to my list.

Good work there. That history document is very extensive, which is excellent! Apparently, a 2.4 kV two-phase system operated in Norwich, until the remaining portions of it were upgraded to 4.8 kV three-phase around 1960.

I think the 15 kV class stuff is 13.8 kV, same voltage as the CL&P stuff in the surrounding area. Haven't seen or heard of any subtransmission though. Groton, nearby, has a municipal utility that runs 34.5 kV subtransmission (only 34.5 kV in the entire state believe it or not!).

That cable under the bridge certainly falls into the "Only a muni" category.

And CPL - it's funny how rare 34.5kV is in some areas compared to others. ND has only ONE 34.5kV circuit in the ENTIRE state - installed in 2006.

CL&P's done a few "cable under bridge" setups as well. I'll have to see if I have pictures of them. One that I remember is this one in Torrington (with a 23 kV trunk line):

Two Westies just down the road from Justin's 10th St. sub link - and one is likely a 37.5kVA can (finned 25kVA unit).

Well, I think I've got enough leads now to do the safari! Unfortunately, I will not be able to do it until I can get one of my cars going. All my car batteries are dead after the temperature stayed below 0 for three days!

David Dahle replied to Power Lines:

Ouch. The pictures I took yesterday were an incidental part of stepping out long enough to give my car some needed exercise so I could be assured that it would start this morning (as was a last-minute shopping excursion on New Years' Eve).

Well, I've got one battery going now, but we've got snow on the way for tomorrow. Then Friday and Saturday are looking like highs in single digits and lows around -10 to -20 (weather I would like not to be stranded in if I run out of fuel, etc.). Sunday may be a good safari day, though, as temperatures are likely to reach 15 to 20 degrees!
